چکیده

We address the problem of integrating heterogeneous data sources for collaborative environments such as Groupware systems. Pre-existing related distributed data is modeled by a composite object, where each data source is treated as a fragment of the composite object. We define a collection of methods which allow manipulation of the related distributed data in a controlled and consistent manner. The composite object created in this manner is referred to as federated object, and it provides a pragmatic approach to data integration. Our approach is different from the approach of integrating heterogeneous database systems, as we do not require each data source to have full database system capabilities. Instead, for the collaborative application environments the data sources can be simple files, application gen~ eraLed binary files, or commercial data servers. The federated objects are especially suitable for computer-supported-cooperative work (CSCW), where coordination and communication among a group of people is required, and the type of collaboration is dynamic in nature. In this paper, we discuss the general properties of federated objects, present implementation principles for the required mappings, and show how federated objects can be used to implement a simple report writer application that needs to access several distributed data sources. A fully developed federated object mechanism relies on a "toolkit" approach, where federated objects are constructed from existing data sources using a C++ class library, which provides the mechanisms needed for access and manipulation of a wide variety of data sources.

Viewpoints: a framework for object oriented database modelling and distribution

The viewpoint concept has received widespread attention recently. Its integration into a data model improves the flexibility of the conventional object-oriented data model and allows one to improve the modelling power of objects. The viewpoint paradigm can be used as a means of providing multiple descriptions of an object and as a means of mastering the complexity of current database systems en...

Data Matching: An Algorithm for Detecting and Resolving Anomalies in Data Federation

Accessing federated data sources and databases leads to several concerns related to anomalies. Specifically, data from integrated and federated data sources can have anomalies such as inconsistency, redundancies and interpretation conflicts in terms of different business contexts. Normally, data is accessed from federated data sources using multi-vendors’ database management systems (DBMS) own ...

Managing Inconsistencies in Data Grid Environments: A Practical Approach

Much work has been done in the area of data access and integration using various data mapping, matching, and loading techniques. One of the main concerns when integrating data from heterogeneous data sources is data redundancy. The concern is mainly due to the different business contexts and purposes from which the data systems were originally built. A common process for accessing data from int...

Mapping Heterogenous Ontologies through Object Views

The traditional concept of a database view is currently under influence on new ideas, in particular the CORBA approach to distributed objects, objectoriented databases, XML and other Web technologies, semistructured data, and autonomous mobile agents. These new trends cause widening the scope of database views by novel features, which are beyond the current theoretical and conceptual paradigms ...

The Viewpoint Mechanism for Object-oriented Databases Modelling, Distribution and Evolution

Over the past years, most of the research dealing with the object multiple representation and evolution has proposed to enrich the monolithic vision of the classical object approach in which an object belongs to one hierarchy class. In databases, much work has been done towards extending models with advanced tools such as view technology, schema evolution support, multiple classification, role ...
